On Friday, May 10th, Montreal’s Akiva School Grade 6 students went shopping at the Metro Supermarket with the very limited budget of $75.00 and the big job of buying enough food for a family of four for a week (including a Shabbat dinner!) The objective of the virtual shopping trip was to give students an understanding of the reality of the lives of the people supported by the kind of organizations funded by MAZON Canada as well as a better appreciation of the food that they eat and, sometimes take for granted.

The project, was developed by MAZON’s Ruth Tovim and enthusiastically adopted by Akiva’s Grade 6 Judaic Studies teacher, Eric Cohen, who integrated the project into the class’s learning of the “Birkat Hamazon”, the Jewish blessing recited after eating a meal to give thanks for the food eaten, the land and G-d that provided it. If you would like to replicate this project in your school, MAZON Canada would be delighted to hear from you.

MAZON Canada is delighted to be participating in the upcoming J-SERVE Global Day of Jewish Youth Service. Since 2005, J-SERVE has been providing teens with the opportunity to fulfill the Jewish values of gemilut chasidim, acts of loving kindness, tzedakah, just and charitable giving, and tikkun olam, the responsibility to repair the world. This year on Sunday, April 28th, five hundred Toronto-area teens – along with ten-thousand youth globally – will come together to in an effort to learn about ways in which they may serve their communities in the hopes of creating meaningful change in the lives of others.

The event is one of over a hundred international J-SERVE projects and is being hosted by B’nai B’rith Youth Organization in collaboration with several youth associations, synagogues, and social service & community agencies. As a proud participant in this extraordinary event, MAZON Canada will be offering an exciting social media and fundraising program that is perfect for teens that are technologically savvy, passionate about sharing new and innovative ideas, and interested in media, marketing, and meeting new people! During MAZON’s project, teens will come together to talk about their interests and experiences in relation to volunteerism and work together to brainstorm ideas about how fundraising and volunteering can play a greater part in their lives and communities. If you or someone you know can’t live without your phone, laptop or tablet and are fascinated by the world of social media, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved in your community and meet others that share your interests – all for a great cause! We want to know what YOU think – your ideas are important and have the power to drastically improve the lives of others in your community and the world.

J-SERVE is graciously being hosted at the Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy (CHAT) Wallenberg Campus and will run from 11:30am to 5pm on Sunday, April 28, 2013. We at MAZON cannot wait to participate in this very important day of service and are looking forward to meeting the very bright, enthusiastic and compassionate youth of today!!
MAZON Canada had the absolute pleasure of attending the Varsity Jews spring concert “The Last Schmaltz,” at Beth Torah Congregation on April 7th, 2013. The Varsity Jews are an incredibly talented, all-volunteer a cappella choir based out of the University of Toronto. Each year, proceeds from the groups’ concert are graciously donated to a deserving charitable organization. As this years’ selected recipient, MAZON Canada is thrilled, honoured, and extremely grateful to the Varsity Jews for their generous support.

“The Last Schmaltz” showcased an eclectic repertoire that featured traditional Hebrew folk music, modern Israeli hits and contemporary pop and rock songs infused with Jewish flare. The musical arrangements, composed by past and present choir members, were fun, engaging, and at times, hauntingly beautiful. The audience was thoroughly entertained and the performance ended with a standing ovation to applaud the Varsity Jews for their outstanding accomplishment.

Congratulations from MAZON Canada to the Varsity Jews on such a fabulous performance and we extend our very sincere, heartfelt thanks for their extraordinary contribution to ending hunger in Canada.

On Thursday, January 31, 2013, JVS Toronto hosted the first Building Bridges, Linking Communities conference. Held appropriately in the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon of the Toronto Reference Library, the conference objective was to showcase cross-cultural initiatives taking place throughout the community. The stage was set for dialogue between organizations in the goal to reach out to other communities and help them build capacity.

Keynote speaker Rabbi Baruch Frydman-Kohl spoke passionately about what makes a Jewish organization “Jewish”. Panelists Mario Calla of COSTI, Mark Gryfe of Gryfe Philanthropic Solutions and Martin Rochwerg of Miller Thomson explained how their organizations evolved to serve the community at large.

The last panel discussion shed light on the work currently taking place in local and national not for profit organizations. MAZON’s National Executive Director participated in the discussion Building Bridges, Past and Current Collaborations alongside Debroy Chan of JVS Toronto, Tina Tehranchian of ICT Canada and Avrum Rosenzweig of Ve’Ahavta. The four described their partnerships and collaborations with community organizations.

After a fabulous kosher lunch catered by Zuchter Berk, Karen Glodenberg , former President and CEO of JVS Toronto, presented MAZON Canada with the first ever Building Bridges Innovation award. MAZON Canada was recognized for demonstrating leadership and innovation in building bridges with other communities and building capacity to help themselves. The award showcases MAZON’s local and national initiatives in delivering services and bringing communities together. Through leadership in reaching out to assist other communities in need, MAZON Canada made a positive impact on the community through the services it delivers. Ida McLaughlin accepted the award on behalf of MAZON and its board of directors.

Informal conversations, “café style”, followed with attendees participating in dialogues with growing new connections in mind. The sessions yielded discussions that open the door to new initiatives and partnerships. The goal of the conference was to get the conversation started and this is precisely what took place.

MAZON Canada invites you, your family and friends to the 2nd Annual Suzanne Burger Family Day Event

While attending last year’s family day skating party Suzanne Burger expressed how happy she was to watch children having fun skating with their sisters and brothers, with their mums and dads, with their friends and with their bubbies and zaidies. Among those enjoying the event, the great kosher food and board games was her own husband Alan, MAZON’s Immediate Past President, her children and grandchildren. Suzanne was moved by the scene of the MAZON family being together and expressed her wish for the event to be an annual one.

Since that day we lost our dear Suzanne. She had a wonderful love of life and passion for family. With you in mind Suzanne and in your honour, here is our annual Suzanne Burger Family Day Skating Party.
