Toronto’s Vital Signs report released

The Toronto Foundation’s Vital Signs finds that income inequality is rising faster in Toronto than any other Canadian city.

With respect to food, 1 in 8 households in Toronto are food insecure.

Low-income neighborhoods are described as food “deserts” or “swamps” where food is scarce and “unhealthy food choices abound.” Costs of nutritious food are rising; +33% since 2009!

The inner suburbs have replaced downtown as areas of most dire need – for example, food bank use has gone up 48% in those neighborhoods since 2008. In addition, the average income of food bank users continues to fall.
