Let all who are hungry come and eat...

MAZON Canada & Akiva School’s Supermarket Trip!

On Friday, May 10th, Montreal’s Akiva School Grade 6 students went shopping at the Metro Supermarket with the very limited budget of $75.00 and the big job of buying enough food for a family of four for a week (including a Shabbat dinner!) The objective of the virtual shopping trip was to give students an understanding of the reality of the lives of the people supported by the kind of organizations funded by MAZON Canada as well as a better appreciation of the food that they eat and, sometimes take for granted.

The project, was developed by MAZON’s Ruth Tovim and enthusiastically adopted by Akiva’s Grade 6 Judaic Studies teacher, Eric Cohen, who integrated the project into the class’s learning of the Birkat Hamazon, the Jewish blessing recited after eating a meal to give thanks for the food eaten, the land and G-d that provided it. If you would like to replicate this project in your school, MAZON Canada would be delighted to hear from you.
